Are You Managing Stress or is Stress Managing You?

Do you often find yourself rubbing the back of your neck, feeling your heart fluttering in your chest and your blood pressure rising to the point where you need to sit down and just breathe? When you head home for the evening are you feeling cranky and easily annoyed, and all you want to do is devour that box of chocolates you left on the counter a few days ago?
Job burnout and stress are rampant in today’s workforce. Making some kind of a stress management plan a daily practice can significantly improve your health, manage feelings, and even improve relationships.

Here are just a couple of helpful tips you might use right away to reduce the stress you’re facing:

1. Establish boundaries

Do whatever you need to do in order to leave work behind and focus on your home life. That might mean being determined not to check work email from home in the evening or on the weekends.

For example, ignore email notifications on your phone from your work account, or set your phone’s email app settings to disable notifications for your work email account in the evening.

People make different choices when it comes to how much they balance their work and home life but establishing some clear boundaries between them can reduce the potential for stress.

2. Take time to recharge

When possible, book a vacation day off to just relax and unwind at home. Occasionally having a single day off in the middle of the week to look forward to can work miracles. Work may be busy, but if you’re stressed out then you’re probably not working at peak efficiency anyway.

Take a day to recharge and then go back to work feeling refreshed and ready to perform at your best. If that’s simply not possible, then at least be sure to take a proper lunch break away from your workspace.
